The region has a 45 year history of both research and manufacturing of advanced semiconductors which includes leading academic institutions (Cardiff & Swansea Universities), applied research (CSA Catapult) and multi-national companies (Vishay, IQE, Microchip & KLA). The region contains an experienced and rapidly growing talent pool and a stream of newly qualified experts on semiconductor technologies.

NetZero Semiconductors has signed a MoU to co-develop innovative new processes and components for power electronics. The Centre of Integrative Semiconductor Materials (CISM) is a founding member of the compound semiconductor cluster and recently opened a new development fab with world-class capabilities and equipment.

Cardiff University's Institute of Compound Semiconductors is central to the compound semiconductor cluster and will be a partner in collaborative R&D projects and co-development of new processes. Cardiff brings unique expertise in optical devices based on compound semiconductors.

Ohio State University

The Ohio State University is leading a multi-institutional, interdisciplinary education and research center to advance the fabrication and development of semiconductors and next-generation device technologies. The new Center for Advanced Semiconductor Fabrication Research and Education (CAFE) lays the foundation for a sustained, highly skilled and diverse semiconductor manufacturing workforce by developing comprehensive experiential learning frameworks for both graduate and undergraduate students, all while paving the way for leading-edge device technologies through state-of-the-art research.

Quantum NIL

Quantum NIL are leaders in Nanoimprint lithography (NIL), a technique that enables the replication of sub-micrometric fine features at wafer level and can be ideally applied onto any substrates. It is viewed as an alterative production solution compared with E-beam and EUV lithography. It has particular application in photonic and opto-electronic devices to create various structures.
